AIO usually stands for AI optimization — the practice of making a brand visible and accurately described across AI systems, from answer engines to assistants — though in SEO writing it is also common shorthand for Google's AI Overviews.

The two meanings meet. AI Overviews is one of the largest AI surfaces a brand can appear on, reaching more than 2.5 billion people a month,[1] and since May 2026 it has been part of one AI Search experience with AI Mode.[2] Google's own documentation doesn't abbreviate it, and says optimizing for it is still SEO.[3]

Key takeaways

  • “AIO” is ambiguous. In glossaries it stands for AI optimization;[4] in SEO writing it often means Google's AI Overviews, as in BrightEdge's research.[5] Check which one is meant.
  • As AI optimization, it is one of several names — with AEO, GEO, LLMO and “AI SEO” — for getting brands into AI-generated answers, and there is no agreed definition that separates them.[4]
  • Google's AI Overviews reach more than 2.5 billion people a month,[1] and BrightEdge found them on 48% of the queries it tracks.[5]
  • An AI Overview correlates with a 58% lower click-through rate for the top-ranking page.[6]
  • Site owners now have a choice: since August 31, 2026, Search Console lets any site opt out of AI Overviews and AI Mode, at the cost of the traffic they send.[7]

What does AIO stand for?

AIO stands for AI Optimization.

ArtificialRead with the next letter as “AI”: software that generates answers, summaries and actions rather than only retrieving documents.
IntelligenceThe second half of “AI”. In the AI Overviews sense, it's the AI in the name of Google's feature.
Optimization · OverviewsOptimization in the AI-optimization sense: being found, understood and recommended by AI systems. Overviews in the Google sense: the summaries at the top of a results page.

How does AI optimization work?

AI optimization applies one idea to every AI system that might describe your brand: answer engines that cite the web, assistants that answer from what they learned in training, AI features inside search engines, and agents that research on a user's behalf. Each gets its information differently, so each fails differently — it leaves you out, it's out of date, or it's wrong.

For the AI Overviews meaning, the mechanics are Google's. An AI Overview is built from pages in Google's index and may use a “query fan-out” of related searches. A page can be used if it is indexed and eligible to show a snippet, and its site hasn't opted out of AI features in Search Console.[3,8]

  1. Know which AI systems matter

Find out where your buyers ask: Google's AI features, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, Claude. In the US, 49% of adults now use AI chatbots.[9]

  2. Fix what they read

Make sure your site, your profiles and your third-party listings state the same current facts, and that each system's crawlers can reach them.[10]

  3. Track each system separately

Ask every engine the same questions and record whether you're mentioned, cited, recommended and described correctly.

AI optimization vs AI Overviews: which AIO?

Same three letters, two different things: one is a practice, the other a Google Search feature.

What every AI system responds to

The levers are the ones behind AEO and GEO, applied everywhere at once.

  • Consistent facts

Assistants that answer from training data repeat what the web said when they were trained. The more consistently your name, category, offering and locations appear, the less room for a wrong answer.

  • The right crawlers let in

Vendors run separate crawlers for search and for training. OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot decides whether a site can appear in ChatGPT search; GPTBot only governs training.[10]

  • Search fundamentals

Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode draw on its search index, and Google says there are no additional technical requirements beyond a page being indexed and eligible to show a snippet.[8]

  • Independent corroboration

Reviews, comparisons and press that describe you in your own terms give every system a second source to confirm what your site says.

AIO by the numbers

The scale of the AI surfaces “AIO” covers, in both of its senses.

Where to start with AIO

  1. Agree on which AIO you mean

When a report or an agency says “AIO”, ask whether it means AI Overviews or AI optimization in general — the scope and the measurement differ.

  2. Read Google's own report

Search Console now reports how your site performs in Google's generative AI features.[7]

  3. Ask the other engines

Search Console only covers Google. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Copilot the questions your buyers ask, and note what they say about you.

  4. Correct the record

Fix wrong or stale facts on your own site first, then on the profiles and listings those systems also read.

  5. Make opt-outs deliberate

Blocking a training crawler and opting out of AI search features are separate decisions with different costs: opting out of AI Overviews ends the traffic they send.[7,13]

AIO questions, answered

What does AIO stand for?

AIO stands either for AI optimization — making a brand visible and accurately described across AI systems — or, in SEO shorthand, for Google's AI Overviews, the AI-generated summaries at the top of some Google results. Context usually tells you which: an “AIO strategy” means the first, “showing up in AIO” usually the second.

Is AIO the same as AEO and GEO?

As AI optimization, largely yes. AEO started with answer engines and GEO with generative search research, but all three now describe getting brands and content into AI-generated answers, and there is no agreed definition that separates them. Google's guidance names AEO and GEO and calls both SEO.

What are Google AI Overviews?

AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that appear at the top of some Google search results, with links to the pages they draw on. They launched in the US on May 14, 2024, after testing in Search Labs, reach more than 2.5 billion people a month, and since May 2026 sit within one AI Search experience alongside AI Mode.

How do I get my site into AI Overviews?

Google says there are no extra technical requirements: a page has to be indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet, and its site mustn't have opted out of AI features in Search Console. Beyond that, what makes a page useful in search applies — unique, helpful content and a good page experience. There is no special schema or AI text file to add.

Can I opt out of AI Overviews?

Yes. Since August 31, 2026, a Search Console setting lets any site opt out of AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google says the setting isn't used as a ranking signal outside those AI features, but an opted-out site gets no traffic or impressions from them. Snippet controls like nosnippet and max-snippet also limit what can be shown.

Does blocking Google-Extended keep my site out of AI Overviews?

No. Google-Extended controls whether your content is used to train Gemini models and to ground answers in the Gemini app and on Vertex AI. It doesn't affect AI Overviews or AI Mode, and Google says it isn't a ranking signal in Search.

How do you measure AI optimization?

One engine at a time. Ask each AI system a fixed set of the questions your buyers ask and record whether your brand is mentioned, whether your site is cited, whether you're recommended and whether the facts stated are right. Ask the same set again over time to see the trend.
